Crittenton Child Care
According to the draft 2008 Community Needs Assessment published by San Francisco’s Department of Children, Youth, and Families, the Bayview- Hunters Point neighborhood contains San Francisco’s third-highest population of children. At the same time, the 2000 Census shows the neighborhood has, during the last two decades, attracted more families with children than any other part of the city. It had 4,300 more residents under age 18 than in 1980, a 58% increase. Between 1980 and 2000, the area’s total population increased by more than 13,000, or 62%.

Unfortunately, childcare availability – particularly subsidized childcare slots – has not kept pace with the increased number of families and children in the neighborhood. Several Needs Assessments show a chronic shortage of childcare centers city-wide. A separate study showed licensed child care is available for 43% of San Francisco working parents. However, an estimated 5 percent of licensed center slots are open for children under the age of two (2007 California Child Care Portfolio published by the California Child Care Resource and Referral Network).

Crittenton Child Care is perfectly positioned to meet this need, providing high-quality care for nearly three decades. In 1984, the agency expanded services to families who could not afford care in the Bayview and Visitacion Valley neighborhoods. In early 2002, the agency further expanded childcare services to a center in Hayes Valley and plans to open a second center at 1030 Oakdale within the next 12-24 months to serve another 46 children and provide a Head Start/preschool component.

Through our Hayes Valley child care center and supporting network of 30-plus licensed home-based providers, we currently provide child care to more than 150 infants and toddlers from 6-weeks to 3-years-old. Children are given age-appropriate learning opportunities including trips to the park, arts and crafts, and other activities that promote healthy emotional and intellectual development. Simultaneously, parents are provided a resource library and on-going workshops to promote unity and family cohesiveness.
