Parent Survey Summary — Nov. 2011Survey StatisticsWithout child care, many low-income parents are unable to secure full-time employment, go to school, or get job training. The lack of child care is a City-wide problem. A 2008 report by San Francisco's Department of Children, Youth & Families found that there's a lack of available licensed child care, a severe shortage of infant/toddler care, and a waitlist for child care subsidies for low-income families thousands long. The report also found that middle income families also struggle to afford the cost of care. Our Child Development Programs are perfectly positioned to meet this need. We provide subsidized child care at three sites in the City: we serve infants and toddlers in Hayes Valley, and K-6th graders at sites in Bayview-Hunters Point and in the Haight Ashbury. Services are delivered in English, Spanish, and Chinese. Children are given age-appropriate learning opportunities including trips to the park, arts and crafts, and other activities that promote healthy emotional and intellectual development. Simultaneously, parents are provided a resource library and on-going workshops to promote unity and family cohesiveness. We also provide half-day (before and after school) enrichment for K-6th graders, along with services for developmentally and physically handicapped children. In addition, FCS-WYCDC manages a Family Child Care Network of 33 licensed child care provider homes in San Francisco, placing children from low-income families in culturally suitable arrangements.
