A shared legacy of helping underserved communities and bettering the lives of San Francisco's struggling families. Florence Crittenton Services has roots dating back to 1889, when Charles Nelson Crittenton established the Florence Crittenton Home in San Francisco. Throughout its history, FCS has adjusted its programming and services to meet the changing needs of San Francisco’s many and diverse communities, particularly those that reside in underserved neighborhoods. FCS has dedicated itself to serving low-income families residing in Bayview-Hunter's Point, Visitacion Valley and the Western Addition, providing high-quality child care and development services for infants and toddlers, job training and placement for adults, and counseling and parenting skills to low-income fathers. For more than 50 years, Whitney Young Child Development Center has advocated for San Francisco’s poor and disadvantaged children. WYCDC has devoted itself to providing full-day childcare for preschool children of working parents, half-day (before and after school) enrichment for K-6th graders, and services for developmentally and physically handicapped children at two sites: one at Bayview/Hunters Point and the other in the Haight/Ashbury district. WYCDC’s programs promote academic readiness, targeting reading, science and math skills, and expose children to a wide variety of learning in the visual and graphic arts, music, dance, computer training, physical education, and self defense. Florence Crittenton Services and Whitney Young Child Development Center merged in July 2011 to create a single robust organization that will provide high-quality childcare to over 350 children from infancy through sixth-grade after school, thereby expanding the continuum of care for those children as they grow up. In addition, the combined organizations will be able to bring job and other family support services to the Bayview, Visitacion Valley and Western Addition neighborhoods.
