Pediatrician Nadine Burke to be Honored at FCS' All That Jazz Benefit
At this year's annual fundraising event, we will honor Dr. Nadine Burke with the 2010 Florence Crittenton Award for Service to San Francisco's children and their families. On May 26th, Dr. Burke will receive the award during the FCS All That Jazz Benefit Gala at Yoshi's Bar and Restaurant in San Francisco's historic Fillmore district.
A pediatrician and tireless advocate for reducing health disparities in the Bayview District, Dr. Burke is Medical Director of the California Pacific Medical Center's Bayview Child Health Center. The Center provides physical exams, immunizations and urgent care. It also has a weight management clinic and provides care for all children regardless of whether their parents have health insurance or their ability to pay.
A 34-year-old graduate of the UC Davis School of Medicine, Dr. Burke was moved to open the clinic in March 2007 in response to the growing health disparities between Bayview residents and the rest of San Francisco. Those disparities include the lowest rate of immunizations, the highest rate of hospitalizations for asthma and the highest rate of obesity. The area has one of the highest infant mortality rates of any ZIP code in California, comparable to Bulgaria and Jamaica.
"To make our community a truly healthy one we need and want a lot more," Dr. Burke says. "Our children must have more open spaces where they can play safely, cleaner air so they can breathe without worrying that the pollution will trigger an asthma attack, grocery stores close to home that sell fresh produce at reasonable prices, and better schools so our children can learn and build a future for themselves."

Well Fargo Volunteers Paint New Jobs Center
Volunteers from Wells Fargo Bank were all smiles as they wielded paint rollers and applied swaths of vibrant color to the new Neighborhood Satellite One Stop Career Link in Visitacion Valley.
The One-Stop job training center is located at 73 Leland Avenue. It will provide a range of employment and job training resources and represents a significant milestone in our commitment to empowering low-income families to become self-sufficient. A grand opening is scheduled for April.
Expiration of Child Tax Credits Could Hurt Millions of Children
This year Congress must make decisions on numerous tax cuts that are set to expire at the end of 2010. Among the cuts that may be eliminated are critical child tax credits targeted to low-income families.
"The child tax credits helped millions of children whose parents are child care workers, preschool staff, home health aides, cashiers at retail stores, waiters or waitresses, dishwashers, grounds maintenance workers, people who clean offices or homes, and others who work for very low wages," according to a report from the Center on Budget & Policy Priorities.
If Congress fails to renew the credits, the report says, millions of low-income families will lose much or all of their credits and will slip deeper into poverty.
Please ask your member of Congress to vote to extend the Child Tax Credit.
Reminder: FCS Helps Working Families Get Tax Credits
