This tax season Florence Crittenton Services is working to make sure that our working families don't miss out on valuable federal and state tax credits. These credits can help put thousands of dollars in the pockets of parents and families who really need it.
In collaboration with the National Women's Law Center, FCS will provide parents with either in-person assistance or a referral to free tax preparation services.
This year the credits are more valuable than ever. For example, nearly three million more children will be eligible for the Child Tax Credit in 2010. Potential tax credits you may be eligible for include:
- Earned Income Tax Credit, which helps provide a wage supplement for low and moderate-income families (those earning less than $48,279 annually). This credit is worth up to $5,657, and is refundable.
- Child Tax Credit, designed to help families offset some of the costs of raising children. This credit is worth up to $1,000 per child. Families who owe little or no income tax can receive some or all of this credit as a refund if they earned at least $3,000 in 2009.
- Child and Dependent Care Tax Credit, designed to offset some of the child or dependent care costs that families incur in order to work. This credit is worth up to $2,100, though the amount that can be claimed is limited by a family's actual federal income tax liability.
- Making Work Pay Credit, designed to increase families' take-home pay. This refundable credit is worth up to $800 for couples. Many workers already have received its benefits through an increase in their take-home pay.
In addition, the City and County of San Francisco provides a Working Families Credit of up to $125 for eligible families. To access the Working Families Credit application, click here.
"These credits can help low-income families make ends meet, but families must claim the credits when they file their tax returns," says Mim Carlson, FCS' Interim Executive Director. "Our goal is to help more families learn about the benefits of these tax credits, so they don't miss out."
